This session will use an entity-centric model approach to examine the impact of consumer privacy regulations on businesses which use artificial intelligence for automated decision-making and individual profiling. We will outline 4 key operational impacts of EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that every entity (e.g. data controllers and/or processors) using AI-based systems should understand. We will consider one of the key impacts “right to explanation” which requires an explanation of decisions made by AI algorithms and right to opt out, to understand how GDPR hinders AI development and innovation. As we step through key data protection principles influencing AI, we will highlight promising privacy-preserving machine learning methods which can help develop AI-based solutions in a privacy-aware manner and generate value for both data controllers and data subjects.
